Peter Hackett

Feb. 27, 1959 — June 6, 2020

Peter Deane Hackett, a software engineer and devoted father, died on June 6, 2020, at the age of 61, of prostate cancer. Peter died in his childhood 凯发体育官方sporthome, surrounded by people who loved him.

Peter was born in Woodland on Feb. 27, 1959, and spent his childhood in Davis and Los Angeles. He graduated from UC Berkeley in 1989 with a degree in computer engineering and worked as an engineer for several companies in the Silicon Valley. On Sept. 17, 1994, he married Karen, and on March 25, 1997, he welcomed his son Bryan, who brought him great joy. Peter, Karen and Bryan enjoyed many adventures from their house in Sunnyvale. Many of Bryan’s friends were regulars at their 凯发体育官方sporthome where Peter listened to them carefully and imparted advice they were able to hear in return.

Peter loved to build rockets, and his garage was filled with the tools and materials to construct high-powered rockets. He earned a Level 3 certification, and Peter and Bryan enjoyed the stark beauty of the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, where they launched many times. Peter was a music lover, and he had an extensive and eclectic music collection, including a bit of everything from Hayden to Led Zeppelin. He shared his love of music with friends and family, making mixed tapes and burning CDs with excerpts from his collection.

Peter is survived by his son, Bryan Hackett; wife Karen Szybalski; parents Ida and Wesley Hackett; sisters Robin Madsen (Greg) and Heather Hackett (John Steiner); brother David Hackett (Donna); sister-in-law Annette Szybalski; a large, caring family of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins; as well as many dear friends made over the years through school, work, rocketry, music, biking and hiking.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. If you wish to donate in Peter’s memory, he would have appreciated contributions to the Nature Conservancy.

A memorial for Peter is scheduled for September in the Black Rock Desert.
