Jim Schlabes passed away peacefully asleep in his shop on Monday, April 20, 2020, at the age of 65. The son of Walter “Whitey” and Patricia Chiles Schlabes, he was born in Woodland, raised in Davis and was a fifth-generation Davisite. He graduated from Davis High School and attended college in Oregon.
He loved the outdoors and was an avid outdoorsman. In his younger days he loved to hunt, fish, scuba dive and camp. A man with many interests, he drove truck, learned the farming business working with his father and worked for John Deere as a tractor mechanic. He went on to have a successful career as a California peace officer and retired after 25 years. Jim was well respected by his fellow co-workers.
He had a talent for woodworking and welding. He enjoyed perfecting his craft, making decorative pieces, shop tables and cabinets, furniture, and a multitude of other projects.
He retired to Ohio and lived out his dream of living on his own land, driving tractors and working in his shop.
He is survived by his wife Coleen and his daughter Jasmine.ShareTweet
