May 27, 1934 — July 8, 2020
Longtime Davis resident and active community member Charlotte Sobeck died at 凯发体育官方sporthome on July 8, 2020.
Charlotte Clarke Hine was born in New York to Mary Cordelia Clarkson Hine and Donald Franklin Hine. She grew up in Garden City, N.Y., and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Smith College and a master’s degree from the University of Illinois. She and Warren Kenneth Musker were married during their graduate-school years.
After completing their degrees, they moved to Davis in 1962. They became part of the UC Davis community when the city of Davis was going through rapid growth and expansion. Their two children, Karen and David, grew up in Davis.
Charlotte was involved in a variety of volunteer organizations but was primarily interested in women’s issues. She held elected positions in the League of Women Voters and the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California. She was active in campaigns for equal rights for women and for opening the priesthood to women. Later, she became an executive director and lobbyist for small nonprofits.
After divorce, Charlotte married longtime Davis family physician, Frederick J. Sobeck in 1977. Being part of the lives of their combined seven children’s journey to become college graduates and begin their chosen careers was a high point for both Charlotte and Fred. Time at their mountain cabin, retirement activities and traveling were also important in their lives.
Fred died in 2006, and four years later Charlotte moved to the University Retirement Community where she discovered both old Davis friends and fascinating new friends.
Charlotte is survived by her two children, Karen Cordelia Johnston and David Jay (Susan) Musker; grandchildren Eric Musker, Logan (Crystal) Johnston, Steven (Kimberly) Musker, Keeler Johnston, and Leah Musker; brother Charles Clarkson (Susan) Hine; and cousin Arthur William (Zara) Renander.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will not be a memorial service.ShareTweet
