Man suspected of attempted vehicle theft

Davis police arrested a 29-year-old man Saturday afternoon after he allegedly tried to steal a car outside a local restaurant.

Lt. Art Camacho said the owner of the Mercedes left the vehicle unlocked and running while dashing into a taqueria in the 600 block of West Covell Boulevard to pick up an order shortly before 1 p.m. He returned to find a man sitting in the driver’s seat “attempting to steal the car,” Camacho said.

“He confronted him, and a physical altercation ensued,” resulting in minor injuries to both men, Camacho said. Officers arrived and arrested Jeffrey C. Nelson, a local transient, on suspicion of attempted vehicle theft, battery and violation of parole.
