DMTC plans auditions for youth production of ‘Godspell’

Davis Musical Theatre Company’s Young Performers Theater plans auditions for a virtual production of “Godspell Jr.”

The original “Godspell” was the first major musical theater offering from three-time Grammy and Academy Award-winner Stephen Schwartz and it took the world by storm. A group of disciples help Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques and a hefty dose of comic timing.

With an eclectic blend of songs, ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, the story of Jesus’ life dances across the stage. Jesus’ messages come vibrantly to life, touching audiences of all spiritual backgrounds with universal themes of kindness, love and tolerance.

In this virtual production, actors will perform elements of the show in realtime via live-stream broadcast to capture the theatrical experience.

Auditions (via Zoom) are 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 27, and 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 28. Young actors will need to sign up for a 30-minute time slot. They should be prepared to sing 18 to 36 bars from a musical theater song (not from this show) and provide their own accompaniment (either a piano-track recording or a karaoke version from YouTube).

Callbacks will be on Thursday, July 30. Given the constraints of virtual callbacks, actors will be provided with a piece of a song ahead of time (and the track).

Rehearsals via Zoom will run from Aug. 3 to Sept. 17 (the last week of that time will be tech week). Performances (songs will be pre-recorded but some scenes will be done live) are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 18 and 19, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20.

There will be no cost involved, except for the cost of the Godspell Jr. T-shirt. The shows will be recorded and available at no charge.
